Post-recovery
Hello guys, I've received tons of messages after my previous post, encouraging words, people who thank for my courage/bravery and are inspired by me. Also, the fact that I always just do anything that I wanna do and the more I fear it, the more I wanna challenge it feeling never dies in me. As i share my adventures, people prescribe the word brave/courage to describe me... And i've been wondering why do people call me courageous and what values define courage. Hence, on my trip to the library to loan some self-improvement books, i chanced upon a book that says The Courage Companion. Well, self-improvement books are a little dry because all you hear about are the examples of how other people made it, how they overcome challenges. I'm more of the 'can't sit there and read other people's success and need to go work my own success out' HEHE. Okay, brief summary for those who wish to leech some knowledge which may be quite straightforward as I can't write in technical terms. So basically, courage is obtained through practice and it's not a virtue that you are born with. Courage is often associated with virtues like resilience and SPINE. It does not mean that you drive your fears away, it is having that gusto to still do it together with the fear. It doesn't have to be selfless or save-the-world acts, just what is blocking you from achieving your personal goals. Also, we need to explore the world fear. Where does your fear stem from? Some common fears are fear of the unknown, such as the future, or a tragic past experience. The common point of these two factors are that nothing can be done to change it. True, future can be prepared but theres still some dust of unknowns. The way to deal with such fear is to focus on your life now. "Living in the present", I saw this slogan on the MRT advertisement for some clothing store xD I suppose it represents the clothing trend but it served as a reminder for me today to live in the present. The book gave examples about the holocaust survivals, someone gave them the strength to live on; like their family etc. There is no such thing as one man show, many occasions have proven that we humans need others to support us. Also, people that are called courageous by others often do not identify themselves as courageous before as it just felt like something they needed to do at that point in time. Fears is intangible, as long as you don't overestimate it or underestimate yourself, nothing should stop you from pursuing your dreams.
Another book that I read was about finding your inner self. I find this book more related to psychology and it really stirred my interest. The background knowledge is that who we are today, our values that translate to our mindset and actions are due to the past experiences that we have. Also, dreams, however nonsensical they seemed to be sometimes, always tells a message about some form of emotions you are going through. Things may be indirect to you, but the experts can interpret your dreams after knowing enough of the past from you. The book talks about how loss can lead to greater loss, how paranoia saves you from further destruction, sick of being love sick, feelings of betrayal etc . It gave me a greater understanding of many situations and the reasons of people's reaction to them. It has broaden my perspective. Our life is so short and there are limited things that we can experience and many encounters that we prefer not to, hence we read a BOOK!:D The wonderful thing about these books: they are knowledge compounded, accumulated throughout the author's life and you can gain insights (maybe not in depth), within a single read. I'm definitely gonna read this book again before I return it to the library as most chapters as quite new perspectives for me and I wanna make sure I fully understand them. Also, shared the essence of every chapter with YuLin on MRT trips home cause she doesn't wanna read but she's interested. Also a good way for me to remind myself.
Back to the topic of my previous post, thank you every one who showed much understanding and sensitivity to me. I really hope my story can inspire you in your own small or big acts of courage.
