Dancing in Unity and CHOOM Semi Finals
It's funny how I'm talking about these two events side by side. In the first place, people are usually surprised by the types of dance I do. Other than the look cool hip hop, I do Kpop, contemporary and a little ballet and chinese dance. My dance journey actually started with Chinese Dance when I was 5. Not a very proud moment because I really started young but my progress was slow and negligible when I was young haha. And I moved on to more exposure in modern dance, ballet and acrobatics in primary school while still doing Chinese dance outside. I guess I liked chinese dance most as the lessons were the most fun and I had the most friends there. Somehow I forgot why but I wanted to join a secondary school that was good in chinese dance, and in previous history HS CHINESE DANCE had gold award in SYF. So yea, I always choose the school for dance before academics HAHA. Then came 4 years of chinese dance in HS while I was pursuing hiphop outside since Sec 1. The combination of chinese dance and hip hop training and the same time probably resulted in some preference or rather strong preference for Lyrical. Also, as I went to SRJC, I just wanted to dance but they didn't have chinese dance. Who would have known that would open me to a whole new world of contemporary (modern) dance that I am so fond of now. After 1.5 years of modern dance training, I followed along the same path and entered SMU because Indancity is like a dream to be in to me.
Luckily enough, I met my mentor in NCPS acrobatics, who brought me into a troupe in PA where we do trainings (mostly wushu and chinese dance) and attended many Chingay since young. Now, I'm given the opportunity to choreograph a chinese dance item in Dancing in Unity, a very prestigious concert put up by a diverse range of chinese dance associations. Also in the dance troupe, DI (Dance inspiration), we put up a show every year called Anyhow Arts where its a platform for young artists to choreograph and share their work. Our item is simple dance wise, but it required a lot of energy channeling and ensuring that everyone was having the same thing in their mind at that point in time. However, being able to be part of this was an eye opener. Witnessing all the talents out there was a sad reality check for me but it always feels like the more I'm exposed to something, the more I fall in love with it. And just like that, nostalgically missing the old chinese dance moments with HS Chinese Dance. There were two male dancers who were doing duet and they really have my admiration. Some people can't stand guys doing ballet, contemp or chinese dance but to me it's like WA PLUS 50 points more than guys who do hiphop?! :b Also, on the grand stage of drama center, with my chinese name being announced and coming forward to receive a huge bouquet of flowers is like what I always witness choreographers doing while I'm the dancer but my first time feeling this moment oh gosh.
The day before bunked in for rehearsal since the morning, and left at night for DFS practice..
After performance, which was 10+pm, rushed to Sembawang studio because they didn't have keys to lock the studio. Stay over at Miu's place.
Next day woke up super early to go home to grab my stuff and left for NP again. Everyone had no motivation and was grumpy, treating the choom semi-finals like a performance just wanna get over and done with. How surprising, we emerged first for semi-finals. Not trying to be complacent but we were really slacking off and other groups were super strong. Anyway, Royal Blood see you guys in finals next year WOHOO!
